Collaborating to integrate more sustainable solutions

"The partnership with DFDS reflects an updated business model and collaboration which is based on a joint commitment to net zero. By extending the focus from environmental impact in our own production to the value chain we create a bigger impact, together.”

Mari Mogen, Head of Sustainability at Norske Skog

Challenge

Meeting greenhouse gas emission goals

Every year, Norske Skog transports its newsprint paper from its factory in Skogn, Norway to Europe and other regions of the world. DFDS have been close partners on a wide range of projects since 1991 and, over those 33 years, have transported over 10 million tonnes of newsprint paper. The company wanted to develop more sustainable solutions in their operations to reduce their general scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

Reducing Scope 3 emissions from transport services delivered by DFDS by up to 15 % in 2024

Norske Skog has set a goal to be Net Zero in 2050. To get there they have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain. They approached us to help find ways to increase sustainability in their transportation and supply chain solutions. Together we identified several investments that will reduce absolute (TtW) greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15% in 2024. Over the coming four years, we will investigate other innovations to further increase those reductions.

Solution

A range of new solutions

Initiatives to date have focused on improving and upgrading assets involved in loading and moving Norske Skog’s products. These have included the development of custom built vessels able to handle paper products with extreme low damage ratio, the expansion of their shipping network and infrastructure, and the creation of a lean multimodal transport and logistics supply chain from factory to warehouses and clients.

A focus on optimisation

Now, with the focus on reducing emissions, we’re putting our energy into developing new solutions. In the future, there are dialogues about biofuels to replace fossil fuels on some routes and the potential installation of shore power, however Norske Skog’s vessels have already undergone the following improvements to reduce their impact on the environment now:

  • Engines have been adapted to use less energy

  • New bottom paint coating to ensure less resistance at sea, reducing energy consumption

  • New propellers installed to reduce energy consumption

  • The automated steering system has been calibrated to ensure maximum energy efficiency when sailing

  • 6 new electric forklifts with paper clamps have been installed on board

“Investment in the vessels is a good start as this will immediately reduce absolute (TtW) greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15%. However, this is not enough to reach net zero. Going forward we have to find new solutions to bring down emissions even further.” - Mari Mogen, Head of Sustainability at Norske Skog

Results

On track to a 15% reduction

The latest initiatives see Norske Skog Skogn on track to reach the goal of cutting Scope 3 emissions by up to 15% in 2024. But with other proposed initiatives under investigation, there will be more reductions to come in the future. Norske Skog is committed to achieving net zero, and the collaboration will continue over the next four years to introduce new initiatives to further increase sustainability and efficiency in Norske Skog’s logistics and transportation.

"We are already only a few months into the new contract period and in dialogue about shore-power implementation. We’ve also been discussing the use of biofuel on the ships and have started to look at introducing trucks to Norske Skog’s supply chain and it is on the agenda now with our electric trucks Fleet growing up to 225 units in the coming years, I think Norske Skog could definitely be a great home for some of them.” - Kasper Svenningsen, Business Development Director, DFDS
