Meeting greenhouse gas emission goals
Every year, Norske Skog transports its newsprint paper from its factory in Skogn, Norway to Europe and other regions of the world. DFDS have been close partners on a wide range of projects since 1991 and, over those 33 years, have transported over 10 million tonnes of newsprint paper. The company wanted to develop more sustainable solutions in their operations to reduce their general scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
Reducing Scope 3 emissions from transport services delivered by DFDS by up to 15 % in 2024
Norske Skog has set a goal to be Net Zero in 2050. To get there they have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain. They approached us to help find ways to increase sustainability in their transportation and supply chain solutions. Together we identified several investments that will reduce absolute (TtW) greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15% in 2024. Over the coming four years, we will investigate other innovations to further increase those reductions.
Solution
A range of new solutions
Initiatives to date have focused on improving and upgrading assets involved in loading and moving Norske Skog’s products. These have included the development of custom built vessels able to handle paper products with extreme low damage ratio, the expansion of their shipping network and infrastructure, and the creation of a lean multimodal transport and logistics supply chain from factory to warehouses and clients.
A focus on optimisation
Now, with the focus on reducing emissions, we’re putting our energy into developing new solutions. In the future, there are dialogues about biofuels to replace fossil fuels on some routes and the potential installation of shore power, however Norske Skog’s vessels have already undergone the following improvements to reduce their impact on the environment now:
Engines have been adapted to use less energy
New bottom paint coating to ensure less resistance at sea, reducing energy consumption
New propellers installed to reduce energy consumption
The automated steering system has been calibrated to ensure maximum energy efficiency when sailing
6 new electric forklifts with paper clamps have been installed on board

Results
On track to a 15% reduction
The latest initiatives see Norske Skog Skogn on track to reach the goal of cutting Scope 3 emissions by up to 15% in 2024. But with other proposed initiatives under investigation, there will be more reductions to come in the future. Norske Skog is committed to achieving net zero, and the collaboration will continue over the next four years to introduce new initiatives to further increase sustainability and efficiency in Norske Skog’s logistics and transportation.
