Challenge
The quest for a lean, effective Nordic distribution hub
Miele aimed to establish a new centrally located Nordic distribution hub to minimise transportation distances in the region and quickly respond to customer needs.
They sought a strategic, trusted 3PL partner to identify the most optimal location for their operations and implement a new IT system to manage logistics, ensuring timely delivery of goods in perfect condition.
Continual improvement and increased sustainability
Miele also wanted their chosen partner to demonstrate how workflows and warehouse operations could be continuously improved, and to have the expertise to provide more sustainable solutions across the entire value chain.
Solution
Reduced emissions construction
DFDS was selected for the project and built a state-of-the-art, 10,000m² warehouse in Jönköping, Sweden, with reduced emissions. This was achieved by implementing energy-saving software and presence-controlled LED lighting. Miele’s goods are transported from their global distribution centre in Germany to the new Nordic hub, from where they are distributed to destinations in Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
Wide range of deliverables
Our logistics contract with Miele includes managing inbound and outbound flows, with a dashboard displaying real-time data, pick-and-pack services, and a unique in-house workshop, staffed by Miele, for on-site repairs. There is also an outlet shop for B-grade appliances. In the future, we will work together to continuously improve all processes.
“With a big implementation like this, you run into problems…but at that point, DFDS really showed their muscles and brought a strong team on site to get everything fixed.” - Vilhelm Boije, Director Supply Chain Management, Nordics & Baltics, Miele
Results
Handling over 50,000 units annually
Miele's new distribution hub processes over 500 orders daily and handles more than 50,000 units each year. Key Nordic customers rate Miele as one of the best suppliers in the region, due to their timely delivery and the short lead times enabled by the new local hub.
By optimising logistics flows and strategically locating the hub, Miele has significantly reduced its overall network emissions, achieving a reduction of 1,250 tonnes of CO2e due to its central position and close proximity to customers.
