Meeting greenhouse gas emission goals
Every year, Norske Skog ships its newsprint paper from its factory in Skogn, Norway, to Europe and other regions worldwide. DFDS has been a close partner on a variety of projects since 1991, and over the past 33 years, has transported more than 10 million tonnes of newsprint paper. The company aims to develop more sustainable solutions in its operations to reduce overall Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
Reducing Scope 3 emissions from transport services delivered by DFDS by up to 15 % in 2024
Norske Skog has set a target to achieve Net Zero by 2050. To reach this goal, they need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain. Norske Skog approached us for assistance in finding ways to enhance sustainability in their transportation and supply chain solutions. Together, we identified several investments that could reduce absolute (TtW) greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15% in 2024. Over the next four years, we will explore additional innovations to further enhance these reductions.
Solution
A range of new solutions
To date, initiatives have concentrated on enhancing and upgrading the assets used in loading and transporting Norske Skog’s products. These initiatives include developing custom-built vessels designed to handle paper products with minimal damage, expanding their shipping network and infrastructure, and creating a streamlined multimodal transport and logistics supply chain from the factory to warehouses and clients.
A focus on optimisation
Now, with the focus on reducing emissions, we are channelling our efforts into developing new solutions. Future discussions include the use of biofuels to replace fossil fuels on certain routes and the potential installation of shore power. However, Norske Skog's vessels have already implemented the following improvements to reduce their environmental impact:
Engines have been adapted to use less energy
New bottom paint coating to ensure less resistance at sea, reducing energy consumption
New propellers installed to reduce energy consumption
The automated steering system has been calibrated to ensure maximum energy efficiency when sailing
6 new electric forklifts with paper clamps have been installed on board

Results
On track to a 15% reduction
The latest initiatives have positioned Norske Skog to achieve its goal of reducing Scope 3 emissions by up to 15% by 2024. With additional proposed initiatives currently under investigation, further reductions are expected in the future. Norske Skog is committed to achieving net zero, and our collaboration will continue over the next four years to implement new initiatives that will enhance sustainability and efficiency in Norske Skog’s shipping and logistics operations.
